His election in 2008 was celebrated around the world as a historic milestone.

Early Life

Barack Hussein Obama II was born on 4 August 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His mother, Ann Dunham, was from Kansas, and his father, Barack Obama Sr., was from Kenya. His parents separated when he was very young, and he spent part of his childhood in Indonesia with his mother and stepfather before returning to Hawaii.

In Honolulu he was raised largely by his maternal grandparents and attended Punahou School. He later studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles before transferring to Columbia University in New York, where he graduated in 1983. In his memoir Dreams from My Father, he reflected on growing up between cultures and searching for a sense of identity.

Career / Rise

After college Obama moved to Chicago to work as a community organiser, helping residents of the city’s South Side respond to job losses and neighbourhood problems. He then attended Harvard Law School, where he became the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. Returning to Chicago, he worked as a civil rights lawyer and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School.

He married Michelle Robinson in 1992, and the couple have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 and served there for several years. His keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention brought him national attention, and that year he won election to the United States Senate.

In 2008 he ran for president, winning the Democratic nomination and then defeating Republican John McCain in the general election. His campaign, built around themes of hope and change, drew large crowds and made unusually effective use of grassroots organising and the internet to reach supporters. He was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States in January 2009 and was re-elected in 2012, defeating Mitt Romney.

Major Achievements

Obama took office during a severe financial crisis and signed an economic stimulus package and new rules for the financial sector. His signature domestic achievement was the Affordable Care Act of 2010, which expanded access to health insurance for millions of Americans.

In foreign policy, he oversaw the 2011 operation in which US forces killed Osama bin Laden, supported the Paris Agreement on climate change, took part in the international nuclear agreement with Iran, and restored diplomatic relations with Cuba. In 2009 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Legacy

As the first African American president, Obama holds a unique place in American history, and his election inspired many people in the United States and abroad. His policies, particularly on health care, remain a subject of debate, but they continue to shape American politics.

Obama also helped shape how a modern presidency communicates. His administration used social media and online video to speak directly with citizens, and his speeches on race, democracy and civic duty are frequently quoted in classrooms and public debates.

Since leaving office in January 2017, he has written books including his presidential memoir A Promised Land, and he works through the Obama Foundation to support young leaders and civic engagement. His speeches and calm public style are still widely studied as examples of modern political communication.

Quick Facts

Born: 4 August 1961, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

Nationality: American

Known for: 44th President of the United States (2009–2017); first African American president

Honours: Nobel Peace Prize (2009)

Books: Dreams from My Father, The Audacity of Hope, A Promised Land

Photo credit: Official portrait of President Barack Obama, 2012.
