For more than two decades he was the heartbeat of Indian cricket, a batter whose name became shorthand for excellence, consistency and humility.

Early Life

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on 24 April 1973 in Bombay, now Mumbai. His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a Marathi novelist and poet, and the family named their youngest son after the music composer Sachin Dev Burman. Sachin grew up in a middle-class household in the Bandra area of the city, and as a boy he was known more for his energy than for any particular plan for the future.

His elder brother Ajit noticed his love of cricket and took him to Ramakant Achrekar, a respected coach who worked at Shivaji Park in Dadar. Under Achrekar’s guidance Sachin moved to Shardashram Vidyamandir school, which had a strong cricket programme. Long hours of practice, matches across the city’s maidans and a coach who demanded discipline shaped his technique. In school cricket he shared a famous record partnership with his friend Vinod Kambli, and word of the teenage prodigy quickly spread through Mumbai cricket circles.

Career / Rise

Tendulkar made his first-class debut for Bombay as a teenager and scored a century on debut. In November 1989, aged just 16, he made his Test debut for India against Pakistan in Karachi, facing one of the fiercest bowling attacks of the era. He was struck on the face by a bouncer during that series but continued batting, an early sign of the resilience that would define him.

Through the 1990s he became the cornerstone of India’s batting line-up. His compact technique, balance and ability to play shots all around the ground made him effective in every condition, from the bouncy pitches of Australia to the turning tracks of the subcontinent. He served as India’s captain on two occasions, though he is remembered far more as a batter than as a leader.

He played in six Cricket World Cups, from 1992 to 2011, and was named Player of the Tournament at the 2003 edition in South Africa. In the Indian Premier League he represented the Mumbai Indians. He retired from international cricket in November 2013 after playing his 200th Test match at the Wankhede Stadium in his home city, delivering an emotional farewell speech that was watched by millions.

Major Achievements

Tendulkar retired as the highest run-scorer in both Test and One Day International (ODI) cricket. He is the only player to have scored 100 centuries in international cricket, and he played 200 Test matches, more than any other cricketer. In 2010, against South Africa in Gwalior, he became the first batter to score a double century in a men’s ODI.

The achievement he cherished most came in 2011, when India won the Cricket World Cup on home soil in Mumbai. His teammates carried him around the Wankhede Stadium on their shoulders after the final, a moment many fans still remember vividly.

Off the field, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament, in 2012. In 2014 he received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, becoming the first sportsperson and the youngest person to be honoured with it.

Legacy

Tendulkar’s influence goes beyond statistics. He began his career when Indian cricket was still finding its global identity and ended it when India was a major force in the sport. A generation of cricketers, including many who later played for India, grew up imitating his stance and his straight drive.

Fans admired not only his records but also his conduct. Through long periods of intense media attention and enormous expectations, he was widely seen as modest, dedicated and respectful of the game. Nicknames such as the “Little Master” and the “Master Blaster” reflect the affection he earned, and his name remains a benchmark against which batting greatness is measured.

Quick Facts

Born: 24 April 1973, Bombay (now Mumbai), India

Nationality: Indian

Known for: Leading run-scorer in Test and ODI cricket; 100 international centuries

Highlights: 2011 Cricket World Cup winner; Bharat Ratna (2014)

Nicknames: Little Master, Master Blaster

Photo credit: Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai, 2016.
